The red-winged blackbird is a familiar sound in every marsh. They are aggressively
territorial and while doing a study on the bird I was fortunate to capture images of a blackbird dive bombing
a blue heron that was obviously too close to one of it's nests. They are polygamous with one male bird having up to
15 different females nesting within his territory....which would explain why it takes most of the day to defend it.
Knowing the usual enemies such as crows, hawks, snakes...I was surprised to learn that the adorable
Marsh Wren is known to destry their eggs to eliminate competition for food and nesting space.
