When I moved to the lower mainland it quickly became my quest
to collect enough reference material on these graceful fishing birds to be
able to compose a painting. This took several trips to bird sanctuaries and a tonne
of patience as they are very skiddish and hard to get close to.
For this
painting I brought home the cattails and did my sketches on transparent paper, this allowed
me to move and flip them around to find the best places to put them.
The Great Blue
Heron is classified as a species at risk due to their quickly diminishing habitat. They
are protected by the BC's wildlife act.
