ABOUT THIS PAINTING
One of our families summer adventurs was a kayaking trip through the Broken Group Islands in Vancouver Island’s Pacific Rim National Park, an archipelago that serves as the ancestral homeland of the Tseshaht First Nation. While there are over 90 island in the Broken Group, only six are designated for day use or camping.
Our excursion stopped for a lunch break on Dodd Island, and as we paddled to the shoreline I saw a small totem carving that greeted us from its perch beneath the thick coastal forest along the shoreline. These islands are steeped in Indigenous history, with countless artifacts still cradled under thick blankets of moss. While the specific story of this carving remains a mystery to me, it perfectly captures the ancient, quiet spirit of the region.
On my bucket list is a trip to Haida Gwaii and hopefully see some cedar monuments still peeking through the forest.
